Topographic Mythology Utah edition
4.5 x 11.5 x 6.5”
I have long been intrigued by the mythologies of star constellations, how the mystery of the stars above us compelled humans to develop stories about gods and monsters. In the 1980s I had reason to fly frequently between Reno and Las Vegas. Nevada. While looking at the desert landscape below, human and animal forms sometimes emerged from the contour shadows. It struck me that if we were sky-bound creatures instead of earth-bound, we would have developed a mythology based on landforms. Seeing strange creatures in contours is even more prevalent when looking at topographic maps. Ever since then I have been painting and drawing on maps in pursuit of topographic myths. This set of four books was done as a mythological exploration of four Utah parklands. The books are bound with a variety of cords and beads, including Utah jasper. The box is made of basswood. |
