Bibliotheca Temporis
9 x 6.75 x 3”
Bibliotheca Temporis is Latin for Library of Time. In this piece I was thinking about the various forms of record-keeping through history and across cultures, but also wanted to include the geologic and geographic record of Earth’s history. Not all history is about humans.
The human modes are represented by:
papyrus scrolls set in rows on two shelves
a bit of bone carved with Ogham (ancient Celtic runes)
a cluster of knotted cords called a Quipu, the Inca method of record keeping
and to represent the record keeping revolution of the printing press- a fragment of paper printed in German blackletter, a piece of wood type and an old leather book cover.
The Earth’s history is represented by the layers of rock, topographic map and a vial of different colored sand. The idea of overlap between human and Earth history is shown by the handmade paper layered between the rocks. |
