Thel's Journey,
Mexico Days
16 x 14 x 3” (diptych open)
Thel is my bird-headed woman alter-ego. She travels wherever I do. I photograph her experiences in various locations. The little book accompanying this diptych is her journal of a season spent in Mexico. The diptych itself is made from a slab of mesquite wood given to me by a Mexican friend who talked a Benedictine monk into relinquishing it. The monks and even the nuns at the monastery near San Miguel are known for their wood carvings which they sell to raise money. Our friend, Patricia, attends the chapel there at the monastery most Sundays. She knows I like interesting natural materials for my art. One day Spike and I came home from our daily wanderings and found this slab of wood on our window sill with a note from Patricia. It was a wonderful gift! It was also the hardest piece of wood I've ever carved. |
